YANKEES PICK UP PEARCE FROM ASTROS
The New York Yankees acquired infielder/outfielder Steve Pearce from the Houston Astros for cash.
What does it give the New York Yankees
This is Pearce's fourth team since the start of the 2011 season, a testament to both his appeal as a hitter and his lack of huge upside. That said, he is a solid bat in the right situations (hitting .275 with three homers in 51 at-bats against lefties this season) and he can play enough defense to be plugged in at either corner outfield spot (as well as first base). In New York Pearce will likely provide backup help at DH, while occasionally seeing time as a pinch-hitter against lefties.
What does it give the Houston Astros
The Astros have jettisoned almost every one of their veteran regular outfielders, so it's no surprise they moved Pearce here. He wasn't playing much lately, but they may miss his experience and leadership a little in the locker room. That said, Houston is taking a closer look at what they have in several of their younger prospects, so freeing up some playing time (while getting an infusion of cash) works for them.
Fantasy impact
Pearce wasn't playing very regularly but his exit may mean a few more at-bats for the likes of recent call-up {P Jimmy Paredes}. In New York, Pearce may get a mild boost in value, but probably isn't fantasy-worthy unless the Yankees sustain a significant injury or two. That said, do expect Pearce to possibly eat into the at-bats of {P Andruw Jones} and/or {P Raul Ibanez} (depending on game situations).
