ASTROS GET PITCHER ELY FROM L.A.

The Houston Astros acquired pitcher John Ely from the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Rob Rasmussen.

What does it give the Houston Astros
In Ely, the Astros land a pitcher that has been knocking on the big-league door the past three seasons. In Houston, he'll get a much greater opportunity to kick the door down and make his mark. Still only 26, Ely has a good chance to be on the Astros' pitching staff in 2013, be it as a starter or reliever.

What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
Rasmussen, a diminutive left-hander, is a Pasadena, California native. Therefore, there was appeal in acquiring him just from that standpoint for the Dodgers. He's also a pretty decent starting pitching prospect. Since the Dodgers are in win-now mode, though, Rasmussen will bide his time in the minors.

Fantasy impact
Ely isn't a great fantasy pitching prospect, but his fantasy outlook is now better as a member of the Astros. He won't make a major impact, however. Rasmussen might, but not for several more seasons.
