ATHLETICS LAND INFIELDER LOWRIE

The Oakland Athletics acquired infielder Jed Lowrie and pitcher Fernando Rodriguez from the Houston Astros for first baseman Chris Carter, pitcher Brad Peacock and catcher Max Stassi.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
In Lowrie, the A's land a switch-hitting infielder with good pop in his bat. A shortstop with the Astros last season, Lowrie can (and probably will) play all four infield positions for Oakland in 2013. He'll probably be in the lineup every day, but will move around (as the team will take full advantage of his position versatility). Rodriguez is a very good arm who will give Oakland even more depth in the middle innings. This was a good deal for both teams.

What does it give the Houston Astros
Carter is viewed as the key player headed to Houston in this five-player swap. Armed with monster power, he is a good bet to spend most of 2013 as Houston's first regular designated hitter (as they're moving to the American League West in 2013). He'll likely battle fellow former A's prospect {P Brett Wallace} for at-bats. Peacock has a much better opportunity to become a quality starter in Houston, while Stassi has long-range upside behind the plate.

Fantasy impact
Carter's power numbers may explode in the smallish Minute Maid Park in Houston, while Peacock could emerge as one of Houston's top starters as early as 2013. They appear to be the clear winners here. Lowrie's value will gain slightly if he plays all over the infield (as expected), but his power numbers could go down in Oakland. Rodriguez will get fewer opportunities to close and set up in Oakland, but he should enjoy the switch to a bigger ball park. Stassi is a long-range keeper to stash away for future reference.
