YANKEES LAND RELIEVER KELLEY
The New York Yankees acquired pitcher Shawn Kelley from the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Abraham Almonte.
What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yankees add some depth for the bullpen here with Kelley, a right-hander coming off a pretty good season with the Mariners. He has the ability to make batters swing and miss, which is always important coming out of the 'pen. Furthermore, the Yankees have plenty of outfield depth in the minors, so they could afford to move Almonte at this time.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
The Mariners have high hopes for young relievers such as {P Carter Capps}, {P Lucas Luetge} and {P Stephen Pryor}, so they deemed Kelley expendable at this time. Furthermore, they've added an outfield prospect with some upside in Almonte, a speedy table-setter type. He has a chance to make the Mariners some time in 2014, after spending time in Triple-A.
Fantasy impact
Kelley's save opportunities should disappear as a Yankee, but he may be asked to set up if injuries pile up in the bullpen. Overall, his fantasy value should remain the same. As for Almonte, he could have a quicker path to the bigs if he continues to develop as a potential leadoff man (something the Mariners currently lack).
