JAYS ADD LATE-INNING INSURANCE IN SCHWIMER

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired pitcher Michael Schwimer from the Philadelphia Phillies for first baseman Art Charles.

What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
Schwimer is a massive righty power pitcher who can dominate with strikeouts, and he's a solid speculative addition to a somewhat-hazy late-inning reliever rotation in Toronto. The Jays still have to sort out where the likes of {P Sergio Santos} and {P Steve Delabar} fit into the later innings after closer {P Casey Janssen}, and Schwimer is a solid insurance arm in case either one doesn't pan out. He still must show he can limit walks, but Schwimer can overpower some batters. {P Luis Perez} was put on the 60-day DL to make room.

What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
Charles is a massive lefty power hitter at first base who has shown solid patience at the dish in his limited minor-league experience. Phillies management butted heads with Schwimer somewhat last year over his playing status, so the team avoids a potential headache here in moving him while adding a still-promising (yet raw) power bat for their system.

Fantasy impact
Neither player is likely to make a fantasy splash in 2013, although Schwimer may be in the Blue Jays' saves (and especially holds) mix if there's a rash of injuries in Toronto again this year. Schwimer has the stuff to probably eventually be a solid MLB closer, so at least keep him on the radar. Charles is worth remembering for a few years from now, as he has the raw tools to be a good pro power hitter (and may eventually be the replacement for {P Ryan Howard}, if all goes his way).
