TEXAS ADDS DEPTH AT CATCHER
The Texas Rangers acquired catcher Robinson Chirinos from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash.
What does it give the Texas Rangers
The Rangers have veteran {P A.J. Pierzynski} and backup {P Geovany Soto} currently on the big-league squad, but they were a little lacking in catching depth. That's why Chirinos was acquired. At 28, there's still time for Chirinos to become a backup catcher in the bigs. However, he needs to show more in all areas.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays have stuck with aging veteran {P Jose Molina} a lot longer than expected, but the veteran backstop is exactly what manager Joe Maddon needs from his catcher: a quality game-caller and leader on the field. Chirinos wasn't viewed as Molina's eventual replacement so the Rays dealt him for an asset or cash.
Fantasy impact
Chirinos isn't likely to become a regular catcher in the big leagues, and his chances of becoming a backup in Texas appear remote as well. From a fantasy standpoint, there's nothing to see here.
