ORIOLES LAND STARTER BUD NORRIS
The Baltimore Orioles acquired pitcher Bud Norris from the Houston Astros for outfielder L.J. Hoes, pitcher Josh Hader and a competitive balance round A draft pick in 2014.
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles have needed help in the starting rotation all season, so it's a testament to the offense, defense, bullpen and manager that they're in contention for the American League East Division crown (albeit in third place at present time). Norris gives them a young starter with a bright future who can help them immediately. Baltimore has had trouble with injuries and inconsistency in their rotation in 2013, so the hope is Norris can provide some stability (and upside) going forward.
What does it give the Houston Astros
Norris was essentially Houston's 'ace', but he was readily available for trade because the Astros are in a lengthy rebuilding plan--and those take time. Hoes has a chance to play every day with the Astros, as the club has no established outfielder at any of the three positions at present time. Hoes can hit and draw walks, so he might be a good fit towards the top of the batting order. He may be limited to left field but should be given every opportunity to succeed. Hader is a long-range prospect, too, albeit several years away from big-league contention. He has good potential but needs to cut down on his propensity for the base on balls.
Fantasy impact
Norris should get a fantasy boost after this trade, especially in terms of wins and quality innings. He also has much better keeper-league value too, since he's still only 28. Hoes also gets a nice fantasy spike, especially if he can establish himself as an everyday player. Hader is too far away, and a bit too wild, to have much keeper-league value at this point.
