RANGERS REEL IN HELP WITH BLACKLEY

The Texas Rangers acquired pitcher Travis Blackley from the Houston Astros for cash considerations and a player to be named later.

What does it give the Texas Rangers
While his earned-run average wasn't pretty, Blackley led the Astros in holds this season before getting sent down to Triple-A. That said, he does have experience as a starter, and provides the Rangers with options as a potential lefty swingman as well. For now he'll remain at the Triple-A level however, giving the contending Rangers organizational depth (and options).

What does it give the Houston Astros
Houston's dismantling of its bullpen continues here, which isn't such a bad thing because it wasn't a very effective group this season. As a very young team looking to rebuild with more youth, moving a vet such as Blackley makes sense here. The Astros have the worst record in baseball, so it's a good time of year for them to start looking at their younger options in the 'pen.

Fantasy impact
Blackley was already toiling in the minors so this deal will only affect the Rangers (and that's only if Blackley gets called up). Even if Blackley winds up being a factor at some point this season for Texas--a big if--it will probably be as a lefty specialist or swingman, so don't expect any fantasy fallout for any of the team's current hurlers.
