The St. Louis Cardinals acquired pitcher John Axford from the Milwaukee Brewers for a player to be named later.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals are hoping Axford can be helpful in middle relief down the stretch. He's a former closer with the Brewers, so he has experience pitching in pressure situations. That is probably what appealed most to the Cards here.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers aren't going anywhere, so they decided to part ways with Axford--who lost the closer job earlier this season. {P Jim Henderson} will continue to pitch in the ninth inning, and Milwaukee will audition other setup men now.
Fantasy impact
Axford could end up in a setup role for the Cardinals, but his fantasy value will remain the same until he returns to closing (which won't happen in St. Louis, with {P Eduardo Mujica} enjoying a career season).
