BUCS ADD BACKUP CATCHER STEWART

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired catcher Chris Stewart from the New York Yankees for a player to be named later.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Pittsburgh was quite successful with their acquisition of a former Yankees catcher last off-season, when they took a chance on veteran {P Russell Martin}. They're hoping history repeats itself by landing backup Stewart, who should form a very strong catching combination with Martin with the Pirates. Stewart isn't much of a hitter, but pitchers love his leadership and game-calling skills. He'll be an asset for the resurgent Bucs.

What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yankees' recent acquisition of {P Brian McCann} to be their everyday catcher, as well as the pending return of backup {P Francisco Cervelli} from an injury-riddled 2013 campaign, largely made Stewart expendable. Therefore, instead of declining to tender him a contract, the Yanks found a taker in Pittsburgh. The Bronx Bombers won't get much in return here, but it is still good asset management to get something for Stewart.

Fantasy impact
Stewart doesn't hold much fantasy value here, since he will play behind Martin in Pittsburgh. Even if Martin goes down, Stewart isn't really a viable backup plan in fantasy baseball.
