RED SOX ADD LEFTY BRESLOW FOR 'PEN
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Craig Breslow from the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitcher Matt Albers and outfielder Scott Podsednik.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox get a quality left-hander for their bullpen, which has been very solid this season. Still, the need for a lefty upgrade was there, since Franklin Morales may be better suited to start these days and Andrew Miller isn't consistent. Furthermore, the BoSox didn't lose much in this deal, as Podsednik was in the minors and Albers is a replaceable righty reliever (replaced by Daniel Bard, perhaps?).
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
The D'backs get a serviceable righty in Albers, plus outfield depth in Podsednik. Since lefty relievers are truly in high demand at this time of the season, it's hard to believe Arizona wasn't able to get a prospect in this trade. While Arizona is still in playoff contention, they could have maximized the return on Breslow but chose to add depth pieces for the here and now. Weird.
