ROCKIES LAND OAKLAND LEFTY ANDERSON
The Colorado Rockies acquired pitcher Brett Anderson and cash from the Oakland Athletics for pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Chris Jensen.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
In Anderson, the Rockies land a more polished left-handed starter than the traded Pomeranz, although Anderson has been mired by injuries lately. In fact, the A's didn't really have a spot in their rotation in 2013 upon his return, so he spent most of his time pitching in relief. That will all change now that he's in Colorado. While his numbers may not look as good pitching in Denver rather than Oakland, Anderson should help Colorado's rotation immensely. The Rox also got Oakland to pay for a portion of Anderson's contract, which is always nice.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics
In Pomeranz, the A's land a less refined version of Anderson and a less expensive one (though the A's did need to pick up a piece of Anderson's remaining contract). Still only 25, Pomeranz has a ton of potential but will be brought along slowly by Oakland (who don't need him in their projected 2014 rotation). In fact, there is even talk of converting Pomeranz to late-inning relief. For now, he'll likely begin his stint with his new team in Triple-A ball. Jensen is a marginal prospect and largely a throw-in here.
Fantasy impact
Anderson's numbers may be skewed as a Rockie, but at least he's assured of a place in the starting rotation now. The reverse can be said of Pomeranz, who is now far more dark horse than good fantasy pickup at this time.
