D-BACKS DEAL AGAIN, LANDING CLOSER REED
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired pitcher Addison Reed from the Chicago White Sox for third baseman Matt Davidson.
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
The D'backs have been busy so far this off-season, and that continues here with the addition of Reed to their late-inning bullpen. The recent trade of {P Heath Bell} opened up some room and need for another big arm in the Arizona closer mix, and Reed more than adequately fills it. Expect Reed, who has 69 total saves over the past two seasons, to take over in the ninth inning in the Diamondbacks' bullpen. Losing a promising position player in Davidson hurts a bit, but Reed should be worth it after last year's bullpen issues.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox
The White Sox have been intent on overhauling their offense this off-season, already signing high-profile first-base prospect {P Jose Abreu} and dealing recently for center-fielder {P Adam Eaton} (also from the D'backs). Davidson can be a bit of a coup for the ChiSox, as he's one of the top third-base prospects in the game and very close to being big-league-ready. Look for Davidson to get every chance to beat out {P Conor Gillaspie} (among others) for the job in spring training.
Fantasy impact
Reed likely gets a fantasy boost now that he's with the D'backs, since Arizona probably has more win potential than the White Sox. Side-arming right-hander {P Brad Ziegler} obviously sees the biggest fantasy downgrade for Arizona as a result of this deal. On the ChiSox side of the swap, look for Davidson to potentially have a breakout season, as he brings a solid mix of power and patience to the plate. Gillaspie's fantasy value nosedives as a result. This trade also opens up Chicago's closer job, although it's unclear who the heir apparent is for the ninth inning. Don't be surprised if the White Sox land another arm for the ninth inning via free agency or trade.
