TEXAS NABS STARTER DEMPSTER

The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Ryan Dempster from the Texas Rangers for third baseman Christian Villanueva and pitcher Kyle Hendricks.

What does it give the Texas Rangers
The Rangers' pitching staff has battled injuries and inconsistency this season, so GM Jon Daniels felt the need to add another veteran to his stables. Dempster should help solidify the rotation significantly, and the Rangers didn't have to surrender top hitting prospect Mike Olt (another third baseman who was on several teams' wish list) in the process. This could work out well for both Texas and Dempster.

What does it give the Chicago Cubs
The Cubs weren't able to land Olt, who would have instantly become the heir apparent at the hot corner, in this deal. However, Villanueva is a pretty good prospect in his own right. Furthermore, he will join the likes of Josh Vitters and Junior Lake to see who eventually winds up as the Cubs' third baseman of the future. Hendricks is also a decent prospect who is having a very good season at Single-A ball. A good haul for the Cubs here.
