A's TAKE A FLYER ON MARKS

The Oakland Athletics acquired pitcher Justin Marks from the Kansas City Royals for cash.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
This is the type of below-the-radar move that Oakland specializes in. Marks has grossly underachieved in the Royals system but still has some potential due to his age (26) and ability to register strikeouts (513 K in 537.1 IP in the minors). He can start or relieve, so don't be surprised to see him in the Bay Area at some point.

What does it give the Kansas City Royals
The Royals gave up on Marks after three-plus seasons in the organization, after being originally with Oakland (drafted in 2009). He only appeared in one big-league game during his time with the Royals (earlier this season) and compiled a 4.57 earned-run average in the minors. He needed a change of scenery.

Fantasy impact
Keep an eye on Marks, as the A's have a habit of turning water into wine with other teams' rejects. He could wind up as a reliever, though, which would negate most of his sleeper appeal. If Oakland uses him as a starter, however, Marks may surprise.
