YANKEES ACQUIRE HEADLEY FROM THE PADS

The New York Yankees acquired infielder Chase Headley and cash from the San Diego Padres for pitcher Rafael De Paula and infielder Yangervis Solarte.

What does it give the New York Yankees
The Bronx Bombers haven't done much bombing from the hot corner so far in 2014, as the combination of Solarte, {P Kelly Johnson}, {P Zelous Wheeler} and a few others have failed to replace the suspended {P Alex Rodriguez}. Enter Headley, who wasn't doing much better in San Diego (.229 BA, 7 HR, 32 RBI) but will get a new lease on life in the AL East Division race. He's a free agent at the end of '14, so Headley will try to end the season with a bang.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres even sent New York some cash to cover some of Headley's salary for the rest of this season, which clearly shows how badly they wanted to part ways with their long-time third sacker. In return, the Pads receive a hard-throwing righty with good upside in De Paula, who must now show his talent at a level higher than high Single-A ball in order to be considered a top pitching prospect. Solarte will provide some depth in the infield in the post-Headley era.

Fantasy impact
De Paula should be the big fantasy winner here, as he should receive a much better shot (and more quickly) at the big leagues with San Diego. He'll also benefit from pitching at PETCO Park upon his arrival--which might now occur in September or next spring. Headley's stock will shoot up a bit as well if he can master the short pench in right field at Yankee Stadium.
