CUBS CORRAL TALENTED TURNER FROM MIAMI

The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Jacob Turner from the Miami Marlins for pitchers Jose Arias and Tyler Bremer.

What does it give the Chicago Cubs
Cubs management has employed an interesting team-building strategy lately: they've loaded up on hitting prospects in the draft, while trading for pitching prospects. So far this has worked out for Chicago (with promising hurlers {P Jake Arrieta} and {P Neil Ramirez} showing improvement), so adding Turner is clearly part of that approach. Turner is a former first-round draft pick (No. 9 overall in 2009) who's still very young at just 23. He's been inconsistent this season, but has definite untapped talent. This might be a steal for the Cubbies.

What does it give the Miami Marlins
Arias and Bremer are both righty reliever prospects enjoying solid campaigns in the lower minors. Both hurlers have some late-inning potential for the big leagues, but neither looks ready to help the Marlins anytime soon. Turner showed flashes of excellence in his time with Miami but things didn't work out this season and the Marlins are moving on. They may regret it in a few years, as Turner has upper-rotation stuff.

Fantasy impact
Turner should get a chance to start for the Cubs sometime down the stretch (maybe soon), and he has definite keeper upside. This change of scenery should help the former top prospect a lot, so monitor him the rest of the way. Arias and Bremer might eventually push for roles in the Marlins bullpen, but that seems a few seasons away for both.
