RED SOX PICK UP RIGHTY-HANDER VARVARO

The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Anthony Varvaro from the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Aaron Kurcz.

What does it give the Boston Red Sox
Varvaro is a 29-year-old journeyman who appeared in 61 big-league games with the Braves in 2014. He'll compete for a spot in middle relief with the BoSox in '15, but won't make a major impact. He merely adds bullpen depth.

What does it give the Atlanta Braves
The 23-year-old Kurcz missed all of 2013 due to injury, but bounced back at Double-A Portland this past season. He is now a reliever full time and has far more upside than Varvavo--though he is not likely to reach the bigs in '15.

Fantasy impact
Varvaro has little fantasy value even if he's pitching in the majors full-time. As for Kurcz, he should be on the fantasy radar as a potential late-inning reliever but is more of a dark horse than sure thing.
