MARLINS GET PRADO IN 5-PLAYER SWAP
The Miami Marlins acquired infielder Martin Prado, pitcher David Phelps and cash from the New York Yankees for pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, first baseman/outfielder Garrett Jones and pitcher Domingo German.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
In Prado, the Marlins land their new starting third baseman (replacing fellow veteran {P Casey McGehee}). His bat control could be very handy in the No. 2 spot in the batting order (behind leadoff speedster {P Dee Gordon}, the new starting second baseman) and ahead of franchise slugger {P Giancarlo Stanton}--who is expected to bat third or fourth in 2015. The Marlins got some money to help pay for Prado's salary in the deal, too. Phelps is a serviceable pitcher who may help replace Eovaldi in the Marlins' rotation (or fill a role out of the bullpen).
What does it give the New York Yankees
For the Yankees, this deal is mostly about landing a solid rotation option in Eovaldi, who is only 24 years old (but already has 79 big-league starts under his belt). He will need to adjust to the American League, and also to pitching in Yankee Stadium, but is a solid addition to the Bronx Bombers at this time. Jones is a left-handed power bat, which should play well at Yankee Stadium. Look for him to back up {P Mark Teixeira} at first base, {P Carlos Beltran} in right field and {P Alex Rodriguez} at DH. Meanwhile, German is a solid long-range pitching prospect.
Fantasy impact
Prado is probably better off in the National League and at third base, so his stock is moving in the right direction again. Eovaldi's stock remains even, but he must adjust to his new surroundings (and some player struggle being members of the Yankees). Phelps has more appeal in the National League, so he has some sleeper appeal. He will need to win a spot in the Miami rotation, though. Jones may have more playing time than the average bench player (given the Yankees' history of injury with regards to the three players he will be backing up), but won't be a fantasy factor unless there's a long-term injury to one of Teixeira, Beltran or Rodriguez. As for German, he should be in the keeper-league draft discussion and is now on the fantasy radar.
