GIANTS GET McGEHEE FOR THIRD BASE
The San Francisco Giants acquired third baseman Casey McGehee from the Miami Marlins for pitchers Kendry Flores and Luis Castillo.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants
The Giants needed a new third baseman, after losing {P Pablo Sandoval} to free agency. Enter McGehee, a professional hitter who should fit in perfectly with San Francisco's veteran approach. McGehee's power was all but forgotten in 2014 (4 HR in 616 AB) upon his return to Major League Baseball--after spending 2013 in Japan--but he was still able to produce 76 RBI for the Fish. The 32-year old is a good fit in San Francisco.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
After Miami acquired {P Martin Prado} from the Yankees to serve as their new third basemen, McGehee became expendable. Therefore, the Marlins did fairly well to get two solid pitching prospects in return. Flores is the key to the deal, as he has middle-of-the-rotation potential as a starting pitcher. Castillo profiles as a reliever and is just 22, so he has plenty of time to develop into a stud late-inning option for Miami.
Fantasy impact
McGehee's fantasy value is better in San Francisco than if he had stayed in Miami (because of Prado's arrival), and is at least as good as it was last season. Don't expect home runs from McGehee, but his RBI total may get a spike playing for the defending champs. Flores and Castillo are on the keeper radar, with Flores the better long-range prospect.
