METS MAKE ANOTHER MOVE, GET LHP TORRES

The New York Mets acquired pitcher Alex Torres from the San Diego Padres for pitcher Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later.

What does it give the New York Mets
Torres has a great arm and has shown the ability to excel in several different roles, so he's a much needed addition right now--especially pitching from the left side--for a Mets staff reeling from injuries (particularly the one to key lefty reliever {P Josh Edgin}). He can probably start if the Mets are pressed, and Torres can certainly be an effective reliever (long or short). This is a solid acquisition by a team looking to shore up its staff and add options.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
Mazzoni has talent (he was a second-round pick in 2011) but he has struggled to keep his ERA down in the upper minors so far. The change of scenery to San Diego may do him some good. That said, this is a curious move by a Padres squad that has very few lefties on staff other than the mostly-unproven {P Frank Garces}.

Fantasy impact
It won't be surprising if talented swingman {P Robbie Erlin} gets called back up from the minors soon by the Padres (to provide much-needed lefty depth at the major league level). He can both start and relieve, and this trade puts Erlin more firmly on the deep sleeper map. Mazzoni appears awhile away from the bigs, while Torres should continue to provide his quality (if limited) innings moving forward.
