GIANTS LAND SP LEAKE FROM CINCINNATI
The San Francisco Giants acquired pitcher Mike Leake from the Cincinnati Reds for infielder Adam Duvall and pitcher Keury Mella.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants
With Jake Peavy, Tim Hudson and Tim Lincecum all aging and somewhat fragile, the Giants felt the need for another starter to help complement ace Madison Bumgarner and veteran righty Matt Cain. Enter Leake, a quality pitcher who provides innings and plenty of mound savvy to a team that already has it in spades.
What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
Dominican Mella is the key player headed to Cincinnati in this deal. Only turning 22 this week, Mella has put up excellent totals in the California League (high Single-A ball) and could be placed on the fast track now that he's been moved to the rebuilding Reds. Duvall is a decent corner infield prospect whose path to the bigs appears to be blocked once more.
Fantasy impact
Leake's fantasy value rises with the move from hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park in Cincy to AT&T Park in San Francisco. Mella's fantasy value is also rising because he should now reach the majors more rapidly as a member of the Reds organization. He has plenty of upside. As for Duvall, he was blocked in San Francisco and appears to be blocked in Cincinnati as well. Could his arrival lead to another Cincy trade involving either 1B Joey Votto or 3B Todd Frazier?
