RANGERS GET VALUABLE OF VENABLE

The Texas Rangers acquired outfielder Will Venable from the San Diego Padres for catcher Marcus Greene Jr. and a player to be named later (Jon Edwards - 08/21/2015).

What does it give the Texas Rangers
This is a solid late-season move for Texas, since veteran Venable can play all three outfield positions and provide a decent left-handed bat. He will probably serve as the team's fourth outfielder for the rest of 2015 but might wind up in a platoon with rookie center-fielder Delino DeShields Jr.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
For the Padres, this is a deal that probably shows the rest of San Diego's players that management is looking ahead to next year. Greene Jr. is several years away from reaching the big leagues but has some upside as a defensive catcher with power. The Friars also get another player to be named here.

Fantasy impact
Venable's fantasy value takes a hit if he winds up as the Rangers' fourth outfielder but he could be a quality short-term replacement for LF Josh Hamilton (knee) for now. Greene Jr. is not radar-worthy for the time being.
