PADRES ACQUIRE INFIELDER PIRELA
The San Diego Padres acquired infielder Jose Pirela from the New York Yankees for pitcher Ronald Herrera.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
For the Padres, adding Pirela gives them another middle infield candidate who could become a quality bench option (or perhaps even a platoon candidate) in 2016. San Diego's infield is anything but settled at present time, so Pirela should have a better oppotunity for playing time in Southern California than he did in New York.
What does it give the New York Yankees
Pirela was a redundant member of the Yankees organization, since they like Rob Refsnyder more as a possible everyday second baseman (and also have budding shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo waiting in the wings). Therefore, they added a decent pitching prospect in Herrera in exchange for Pirela. Solid move by both clubs.
Fantasy impact
Pirela is at best a fantasy dark horse but he may see a pretty fair amount of playing time if he wins a job in spring training. Refsnyder should also benefit from this deal, while Herrera is a fantasy long shot.
