A'S, PADRES SWAP FIVE PLAYERS
The Oakland Athletics acquired first baseman Yonder Alonso and pitcher Marc Rzepczynski from the San Diego Padres for pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Jose Torres, and a player to be named later.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics
In Alonso, the Athletics land a solid first baseman with some untapped home-run upside. He walks a lot, which Oakland loves, and plays good defense at first. Rzepczynski is a quality left-handed reliever who should thrive with the A's (and may see a few save opportunities, to go along with plenty of setup appearances).
What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres are desperate to add starting pitching, so they sent their starting first baseman to Oakland in order to land Pomeranz, a solid lefty who pitched mostly out of the bullpen in 2015. Still only 27 years old, look for the towering left-hander to compete for a roster spot in spring training. Torres is a young arm with upside.
Fantasy impact
Alonso should improve his fantasy stock in Oakland, even though he could wind up in a platoon at first base. Pomeranz and Rzepczynski should also benefit from this trade from a fantasy perspective, while Torres is a name to file away for the future.
