CARDINALS LAND IF JEDD GYORKO
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired infielder Jedd Gyorko and cash from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Jon Jay.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals already boast solid middle infielders Jhonny Peralta (shortstop) and Kolten Wong (second base), so the addition of Gyorko at this time is a bit of a head-scratcher. He figures to play all over the infield, but his arrival could lead to another move (possibly a Wong trade?) by St. Louis.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres even accepted to pay some of Gyorko's salary just to unload him. In doing so, San Diego also added a decent center-fielder in Jay--who should probably be used in a platoon with his new team (and who also has experience as an everyday player). This deal should help the Padres.
Fantasy impact
Gyorko's fantasy value is now on hold because of the logjam in the Cardinals' infield. His arrival also hurts Wong to some degree. Jay's value, on the other hand, could be on the rise if he wins the starting center field job in San Diego out of spring training.
