JAYS MOVE MILLS FOR MATHIS
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired catcher Jeff Mathis from the Los Angeles Angels for pitcher Brad Mills.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
Mathis is a nice backup (or even platoon) option behind the plate for the young Blue Jays. He's excellent defensively and calls a good game, making him a perfect replacement for Jose Molina (who left for Tampa Bay). The arrival of Mathis also gives the Jays more lineup options (since hard-hitting starting catcher J.P. Arencibia can also DH). It's unclear why the Jays never gave Mills a longer look at the big-league level, but their rotation is already deep with young talent.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels
In Mills, the Angels get a crafty and underrated lefty starter who has been very good at Triple-A the past couple of years and should give them solid depth at the bottom of their rotation. With veteran catcher Chris Iannetta recently acquired (and talented youngster Hank Conger set to take on a growing role), the Angels could afford to part with the steady (but offensively-challenged) Mathis.
