HOUSTON GETS KRATZ FOR STRAILY
The Houston Astros acquired catcher Erik Kratz from the San Diego Padres for pitcher Dan Straily.
What does it give the Houston Astros
The Astros needed a right-hand-hitting catcher to complement lefty starter Jason Castro because of an injury to rookie Max Stassi (wrist), so they decided to bring in journeyman vet Kratz. He should be a nice fit (temporarily) in a backup role behind Castro.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
For the Padres, this deal was made from a position of strength, as Kratz was fourth on San Diego's catcher depth chart behind Derek Norris, Christian Bethancourt and Austin Hedges. Therefore, they were able to secure a decent pitcher in Straily for him.
Fantasy impact
Kratz isn't going to be much of a fantasy factor unless Castro gets injured too, since Kratz may only play against left-handed starters. As for Straily, he could be back on the fantasy radar now that he's with the Padres. First, he will have to carve out an important role on the pitching staff (which may take some time).
