MARLINS ADD CASHNER IN 7-PLAYER TRADE
The Miami Marlins acquired pitchers Andrew Cashner, Colin Rea and Tayron Guerrero, and cash to the San Diego Padres for pitchers Jarred Cosart, Carter Capps and Luis Castillo, and outfielder/first baseman Josh Naylor.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
This is a huge deal for Miami, as it provides the club with two new starting pitchers for the stretch drive. Cashner should become the team's No. 2 starter behind ace Jose Fernandez, especially with left-hander Wei-Yin Chen currently on the disabled list. Rea will probably slide into the No. 5 starter role and provide more starting depth. As for Guerrero, he has plenty of untapped upside with a great fastball. Therefore, he could become a factor for the Marlins' bullpen at some point down the stretch. The Fish also got San Diego to pay some cash in this deal, which always helps the bottom line in South Florida.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
For the Padres, getting both Naylor and Castillo in this trade is huge. Naylor was arguably Miami's top prospect and should immediately be considered San Diego's first baseman of the future (he may eventually force Wil Myers to move back to the outfield), while Castillo is an excellent starting pitching prospect for the future. Capps might now be considered the Padres' future closer, though he is on the comeback trail from Tommy John surgery and may not be ready for the start of 2017. As for Cosart, a former top prospect in MLB, he will probably help replace the departed Cashner and Rea in the rotation.
Fantasy impact
This deal seems like a nice fantasy boost for Cashner, Guerrero, Cosart, Capps and especially Castillo. Cashner is a potential free agent this winter, so he has incentive to pitch very well in Miami down the stretch. Castillo may be closer to reaching the bigs now that he is with the Padres. As for Rea, his value largely remains the same. Naylor may have been better off as a Marlin than as a Padre but only because of the dimensions at PETCO Park. His fantasy future remains quite bright. Both Naylor and Castillo are good keeper-league options for the future.
