RED SOX LAND RELIEVER MELANCON

The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Mark Melancon from the Houston Astros for infielder Jed Lowrie and pitcher Kyle Weiland.

What does it give the Boston Red Sox
Melancon should fill a hole in the Boston bullpen in 2012, whether it's as closer or setup man. Jonathan Papelbon is gone, so the ninth inning is available again. Setup man Daniel Bard is a candidate for that role, but he's also being talked about as a possible starting candidate. Therefore, adding Melancon to the mix at this time was a good idea. Expect him to pitch mostly in the eighth inning.

What does it give the Houston Astros
The Astros also did well in this deal, mainly because Lowrie should be able to solidify the shortstop position and provide more offense to the overall lineup. Also, Weiland has a bit of upside as a possible fifth starter for Houston. Melancon did well last season, but the 'Stros need help everywhere. So, selling high on their closer made a lot of sense.
