CHI-SOX LAND BACKUP CLOSER

The Chicago White Sox acquired pitcher Mike MacDougal from the Kansas City Royals for minor league pitchers Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes.

What does it give the Chicago White Sox
It had been rumored that the defending champs were after some bullpen help and they got a quality reliever in MacDougal, the Royals' closer in 2003 and 2005. Of course, he would have been their closer throughout this season if a shoulder injury had not forced him to miss the first half. He'll slip into a setup role in Chicago and serve as insurance in case anything happens to closer Bobby Jenks.

What does it give the Kansas City Royals
The Royals did well here to get a couple of promising, young hurlers. Lumsden is a big southpaw picked by the Sox in the first round two years ago. In his first pro season as a full-time starter, he's been pretty lights-out at Double-A with his hard heat and solid curveball. He's just the kind of kid the Royals need. A couple of levels lower, Cortes hasn't been quite as effective. But the big, 19-year-old righty still has good command and promising stuff, not to mention plenty of time to improve.
