ROYALS GET YOUNG SLUGGER FOR HURLERS

The Colorado Rockies acquired pitchers Jeremy Affeldt and Denny Bautista from the Kansas City Royals for first baseman Ryan Shealy and pitcher Scott Dohmann.

What does it give the Colorado Rockies
The Royals have been high on the 27-year-old Affeldt for years now. But the big southpaw has mostly been a bust in the majors, trying him as a starter, setup man and closer. The Rockies will probably use him as a reliever for now, but the combination of struggling pitcher and Coors Field sounds pretty volatile. Bautista is another hurler the Royals had been high on but failed to produce in the majors. The big righty has split his season between the majors and minors, with almost no success at either level. So, the Rockies have acquired two struggling pitchers to employ in their hitters' park. Doesn't sound like a great plan, but both are promising nonetheless if the club can turn them around.

What does it give the Kansas City Royals
Almost 27, Shealy needed a chance to land an everyday job in the majors and he wasn't going to get it in Colorado. In Kansas City, the big right-handed slugger will get that chance in the very near future, if not right away. He's more than proven himself in the minors, with plenty of power and the ability to hit for good average. While Dohmann has more big-league experience, that experience hasn't been great. In a few stints with the Rockies, when he's been hit he's been hit hard. But the big righty could benefit from less of a hitters' park in K.C. as a middle reliever.
