MURPHY TO OAKLAND

The Oakland Athletics acquired infielder Donnie Murphy from the Kansas City Royals for cash.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
Once upon a time, Murphy was the heir apparent at second base for the Royals. However, he has spent the past two years at the Double-A level and seems to have stagnated. A fresh start in Oakland may do the 23-year-old Murphy a world of good. In fact, he may even challenge Mark Ellis at second base down the road.

What does it give the Kansas City Royals
The Royals gave up on Murphy in part because of the presence of Mark Grudzielanek and Jeff Keppinger ahead of him on the depth chart. And since the Royals are always looking for ways to improve the bottom line, they accepted cash in return for a decent position-player prospect. While Murphy may never pan out, there is just as much of a chance that the Royals will add Murphy to their growing list of the ones that got away.
