BACKUP CATCHER LERUD TO O'S
The Baltimore Orioles acquired catcher Steven Lerud from the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named later.
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles are set behind the dish for the next decade-plus with Matt Wieters but need to continue cultivating talent behind him, and Lerud may eventually help in that regard. Lerud was talented enough to be a 3rd-round pick back in 2003 and may still have some upside, and the O's obviously see something in him.
What does it give the Kansas City Royals
Kansas City recently jettisoned veteran catchers Miguel Olivo and John Buck (in favor for grizzled vet Jason Kendall) so it's not like they're stacked in catching depth. That said, they do have the promising Wil Myers in the system and may have grown tired of waiting for Lerud's overall game to come around.
