BRAVES, ROYALS SWAP FIVE
The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder Rick Ankiel and pitcher Kyle Farnsworth from the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Gregor Blanco and pitchers Jesse Chavez and Tim Collins.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves
In this deal, the Braves add a left-handed bat who can play all three outfield positions in Ankiel, plus a solid right-handed arm for the bullpen. Ankiel could wind up the starter in center field, ahead of Melky Cabrera. Farnsworth should replace Chavez in middle relief.
What does it give the Kansas City Royals
Chavez and Collins are two young relievers with some upside, while Blanco profiles as more of a speedy fourth outfielder. However, Blanco should see a lot of action down the stretch, due to injuries and trades in the Royals outfield.
