ROSS TO THE REDS
The Cincinnati Reds acquired outfielder Cody Ross from the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named later.
What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
The Reds were successful in adding Brandon Phillips--another prospect who had been designated for assignment by his former club--earlier in the year, so they hope lightning strikes twice with Ross. The addition of Ross as the fourth outfielder will likely mean a return to second base for Ryan Freel once Ken Griffey is activated off the DL, though Phillips' hot streak could keep the latter in the lineup.
What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers had too many outfielders, both on the current roster and in the system, so keeping Ross wasn't possible. In fact, Ross's fate was likely sealed when the Dodgers converted former shortstop Joel Guzman to left field during spring training.
