ALOMAR RETURNS TO SOUTH SIDE

The Chicago White Sox acquired catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. from the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor-league pitcher B.J. LaMura.

What does it give the Chicago White Sox
With veteran Chris Widger struggling as backup catcher, the Sox felt the need to upgrade and went to the much-older Alomar to fill that role. The 40-year-old was actually Widgers predecessor as the White Sox's backup catcher from mid-2002 to 2004, so he heads to familiar territory. While he's five years older than Widger, Alomar has rediscovered his bat in L.A. this year, which is a plus, but they still don't need to rely on him a whole lot with A.J. Pierzynski as No. 1.

What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
Converted into a full-time reliever for the first time this season at Double-A, the 25-year-old LaMura has flourished. However, the hard-throwing righty has struggled in the past, making him a relatively low-level prospect. Still, if he can keep up what he's done at Double-A this year, he could be a big-league reliever before long.
