VARGAS FOR ROTTINO

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired pitcher Claudio Vargas from the Los Angeles Dodgers for utility man Vinny Rottino.

What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers are very familiar with Vargas, who pitched for them in 2007, and they know he brings a solid veteran power arm and the versatility to start or relieve. Milwaukee's starting rotation has struggled mightily after ace Yovani Gallardo, so bringing in Vargas certainly gives them more options there. He appears to have recovered nicely from a serious injury to his throwing elbow incurred earlier this season.

What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
Rottino is 29 years old and has only played in 18 major league games, so he is not exactly a top prospect. That said, he can play pretty much every position on the diamond (including catcher), and has a solid bat and good speed. Those qualities could make him a solid reserve for the Dodgers.
