FURCAL TO ST. LOUIS

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired infielder Rafael Furcal and cash from the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder/outfielder Alex Castellanos.

What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
Furcal should help the Cardinals in two areas: shortstop and at the top of the batting order. His arrival will probably shift Ryan Theriot to second base full time, with Skip Schumaker becoming more of a utility man. Furcal isn't the offensive catalyst of yesteryear, but he should still help the Cardinals down the stretch.

What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers' prime motivation for dumping Furcal was to promote shortstop prospect Dee Gordon from AAA. Castellanos has raw power and ability, but is anything but a finished product at this time. Could the Dodgers have landed a better prospect for their starting shortstop? Probably so.
