YANKS MOVE MITRE FOR DICKERSON
The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Chris Dickerson from the Milwaukee Brewers for pitcher Sergio Mitre.
What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yanks were in need of versatile veteran insurance in center field, since usual starter Curtis Granderson is dealing with an injury to his oblique (and New York's other options there are either limited defensively or somewhat unproven). Dickerson has some untapped potential, so may be a minor steal here. Moreover, the Yankee brass made a bold and interesting decision late in spring to keep aging journeymen starters (but former stars) Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon. With Garcia likely the team's new fifth starter and Colon the long man, Mitre became expendable.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
Injuries to cornerstone starters Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum have Milwaukee's April rotation filled will question marks. Enter Mitre, who has shown he can be solid as a starter when called upon (but is also effective in long relief). Milwaukee appears set to contend this season, so getting a versatile vet such as Mitre is a nice depth move. Dickerson was expendable with No. 4 outfielder Brandon Boggs playing well for the Brewers this spring.
