BUCS BRING IN MCGAHEE, MOVE VET VERAS
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired third baseman Casey McGehee from the Milwaukee Brewers for pitcher Jose Veras.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Overall, a nice depth addition for the Bucs. Projected third baseman Pedro Alvarez was a major disappointment for Pittsburgh in 2011 (a season in which he was expected to break out), so the Pirates are clearly trying to both motivate Alvarez and upgrade the position. McGehee can also play at second and first, and has an above-average bat when he's on his game.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee recently signed free agent slugger Aramis Ramirez to be their answer at third base, so moving McGehee was the logical next step. Veras is a veteran arm with some closing experience, making him a solid depth fit for the still-contending Brew Crew. He's not particularly consistent or efficient, but can be used in several different situations.
