METS ACQUIRE VETERAN CASTILLO

The New York Mets acquired second baseman Luis Castillo from the Minnesota Twins for minor-league outfielder Dustin Martin and catcher Drew Butera.

What does it give the New York Mets
With veteran second baseman Jose Valentin out potentially until September with a broken leg, the first-place Mets had to find a replacement and Castillo will do nicely. The consummate singles hitter, he adds even more speed to an already fleet squad and he can fit in as a good No. 2 hitter behind super-speedy shortstop Jose Reyes. Castillo is a veteran with a World Series championship behind him and strong defensive skills. He's a free agent after this season.

What does it give the Minnesota Twins
Still holding a faint hope at heating up and making the postseason, this deal doesn't quite signify that the Twins are throwing in the towel, but their infield does get weaker here. However, they get a little added hope for the future in the two prospects. Martin is an outfielder who can do a little bit of everything but doesn't do anything extremely well. He's a good contact hitter who can play good defense anywhere in the outfield, giving him potential to make the majors in a few years as a fourth outfielder. Butera is a somewhat mediocre catching prospect. Now in his third pro season, he has struggled with the bat but does have a little power.
