HAWKINS TO 'STROS
The Houston Astros acquired pitcher LaTroy Hawkins from the New York Yankees for infielder Matt Cusick.
What does it give the Houston Astros
This is fairly risk free for Houston, but it's still strange that GM
Ed Wade is buying rather than selling at the deadline (this deal
following the Randy Wolf trade). Hawkins struggled in New York this
year and was recently designated for assignment, but has always
pitches well in the National League, where he's previously spent three
totals seasons with the Cubs, Giants and Rockies. He'll help set-up
Jose Valverde, and should boost Houston's less-than-stellar pen. The
free agent-to-be could probably turn two good months into another
contract during the off-season, with Houston or elsewhere.
What does it give the New York Yankees
The fact that New York was willing to part with Hawkins the same day
that Kyle Farnsworth's departure left a hole in their bullpen should
say something about their confidence in him. Matt Cusick isn't an
elite prospect, but has put up decent power and speed numbers in the
low minors, playing both second and third base. He might eventually
make the majors as a utility infielder, with New York or elsewhere.
The Yankees just wanted to be rid of Hawkins, and evidently liked
Cusick more than what other prospective suitors (Detroit and
Minnesota, reportedly) were offering.
