LUIS MARTINEZ TO TEXAS

The Texas Rangers acquired catcher Luis Martinez from the San Diego Padres for pitcher Ryan Kelly.

What does it give the Texas Rangers
The Rangers add a little catching depth here. Manager Ron Washington has used three catchers in the past, and will often use Mike Napoli or Yorvit Torrealba at the DH slot, so Martinez has a good chance to stick as a third stringer in 2012. He's mostly a receiver and offers little home run power.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
Kelly is 24 years old and versatile: he has started and closed in the minor leagues, giving the Padres future options. He won't be ready to take hold of a big-league roster spot in 2012 but has some upside. This is a solid return for San Diego here, since they had already designated Martinez for assignment.

Fantasy impact
There isn't much fantasy value here, as both Martinez and Kelly will be depth players in Major League Baseball.
