BROOKS HOUSTON BOUND IN 5-TEAM TRADE

In a five-team trade, the Houston Rockets acquired forward Dillon Brooks from the Memphis Grizzlies, two future second-round draft picks from the Los Angeles Clippers, and forward Alpha Kaba from the Atlanta Hawks; the Oklahoma City Thunder acquired guard Patty Mills, a second-round draft pick in 2024, a second-round draft pick in 2029 and a second-round draft pick in 2030 from the Rockets; Atlanta acquired center/forward Usman Garuba, guard TyTy Washington Jr. and two future second-round draft picks from the Rockets, and cash considerations from the Thunder; Memphis acquired guard Josh Christopher from the Rockets; and Los Angeles acquired forward Kenyon Martin Jr. from the Thunder.

What does it give the Houston Rockets
Brooks was signed to a new deal with Memphis, and then sent to Houston in a sign-and-trade move. Brooks is an elite defensive wing, so he should really help the young Rockets. That said, he does come with some baggage: his emotions can get the better of him from time to time.

What does it give the Oklahoma City Thunder
For Oklahoma City, this trade is mostly about adding three future second-round draft picks in exchange for some cash. Technically, the Thunder gave up Martin Jr. in this complicated transaction, but the latter never spent any time as a member of the OKC franchise before being moved to the Clippers.

What does it give the Atlanta Hawks
For the Hawks, Garuba adds to their stable of big men. He has some intriguing upside but could be blocked by the likes of Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu–to name two. Washington Jr. should gain a fresh start in Atlanta and might end up as Trae Young's backup at the point in 2023-24.

What does it give the Los Angeles Clippers
This trade helps the Clippers in terms of their depth. With superstars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George often sidelined due to injury, Martin Jr. should see ample playing time off the LA bench. They are all three versatile enough to be on the court at the same time, too.

What does it give the Memphis Grizzlies
For Memphis, this move makes the Grizz look like the clear losers of this multi-trade deal. However, Brooks needed to be moved out and could have signed with Houston as an unrestricted free agent. So, adding Christopher to the mix is a bit like gaining a young player for nothing.

Fantasy impact
Brooks adds a lot of value to the Rockets organization, but how much will he help fantasy teams? That is up for debate. Draft him late or not at all in 2023. Garuba and Washington Jr. have keeper-league value, but not so much for this upcoming season. Ditto Christopher. As for Martin Jr., he could be the biggest fantasy winner after this mega trade. Draft him late and hope for a big breakthrough performance in LA.
