STEPHEN JACKSON FOR RICHARD JEFFERSON
The San Antonio Spurs acquired guard/forward Stephen Jackson from the Golden State Warriors for small forward Richard Jefferson and a 2012 1st-round draft pick.
What does it give the San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs get two key benefits from this deal: first, they attain more financial flexibility down the road (since Jackson has only one more year on his big contract left after this one, while Jefferson has two); and second, Jackson can play some point guard, which Jefferson didn't. That could be key considering {P Manu Ginobili}'s iffy health, and Jackson is a veteran who may be a slight leadership upgrade over Jefferson. Furthermore, the move may open up more small forward minutes for the fast-improving {P Kawhi Leonard} and {P Danny Green}. Yielding the first-rounder is a bit steep, but this deal helps San Antonio now and in the future.
What does it give the Golden State Warriors
Jefferson brings some much-needed veteran stability at both the small forward and shooting guard spots, and is a nice fit for the Warriors' high-scoring, perimeter-focused, up-tempo style. Adding Jefferson gives them a little less financial wiggle room (since he's locked in for two more seasons after this one), but getting a first-round draft pick in the deal compensates them for that nicely. The Warriors are quietly putting together a nice core that should be a challenger in the West sooner rather than later.
