MCGEE AND TURIAF TO NUGGETS FOR NENE
The Denver Nuggets acquired centers JaVale McGee and Ronny Turiaf from the Washington Wizards for center Nene Hilario.
What does it give the Denver Nuggets
McGee has a very affordable and expiring contract, so if he doesn't work out then Denver frees up a lot of money for the off-season (since Hilario had a hefty deal). That said, Nuggets bench boss George Karl often does a great job of getting the most out of players seen as having attitude issues, and McGee had played his way out of favor in Washington. The Nuggets are obviously hoping McGee can get back on track to stardom and re-sign with them. Meanwhile Turiaf is a very solid depth addition who brings veteran leadership (if some durability issues).
What does it give the Washington Wizards
The Wiz faced losing McGee after this season to free agency, so they do a great job here of landing a quality big man in Nene (who is also locked up for four more seasons). That said, Washington is also taking on some risk here, since Hilario isn't a great rebounder and had always had some consistency issues. Still, with Washington seemingly intent on changing their team culture, it's hard to find much fault in this swap.
