MAVS LAND ODOM FROM LAKERS
The Dallas Mavericks acquired forward Lamar Odom and a 2012 second-round draft pick from the Los Angeles Lakers for a 2012 first-round draft pick and a trade exception.
What does it give the Dallas Mavericks
After cutting ties with defensive star center Tyson Chandler (whom they signed and traded to the Knicks), the Mavs were left with a major need for size and energy in the frontcourt. Odom more than fills that void. While he's not a center, he is a highly underrated all-round force who's one of the NBA's top rebounders, a very good offensive player, and a quality defender. Actually, Odom is probably an upgrade overall to Chandler (if not quite the defender). Expect him to lead the Mavs' top unit off the bench along with Jason Terry, and expect the Mavs to remain a major contender for the NBA title.
What does it give the Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers are making a lot of curious moves lately in general, and this Odom deal is no different. L.A.'s decision to trade Odom doesn't really add up right now, as they're a team with a mostly aging veteran core. They appear to be trying to free up cap space for a big acquisition (especially in the wake of not managing to deal for Chris Paul) and the trade exception lets them bring in someone with a sizable salary. That said, it may be hard for them to find a veteran player who brings everything Odom does, so this one may be tough for Lakers fans to swallow. The first-round pick is a nice bonus but it's not likely to yield a great player in 2012 (since Dallas looks set to again be at the top of the standings, and the pick is also protected).
