RAJON RONDO TO BOSTON
The Boston Celtics acquired point guard Rajon Rondo (the 2006 draft's No.21 overall pick) and forward-center Brian Grant from the Phoenix Suns for a future first-round draft pick.
What does it give the Boston Celtics
Yet another smallish but lightning-quick point guard who will push Sebastian Telfair for the starting job going forward. Rondo dropped a little in the draft, likely because of perceived inconsistency in his effort. Yet Boston boss Danny Ainge obviously saw past that to Rondo's superb playmaking skills and his elite athleticism. Rondo has the ability to eventually be a very effective starter for the Celtics, but he will need to beat out Telfair (acquired earlier in the day) for that role. Grant was likely a throw-in for money purposes and may not stick around in Boston.
What does it give the Phoenix Suns
Yet another way to save money, and a likely solid future player from the draft pick. Phoenix is more or less set with their core players moving forward, and didn't want to add the rookie salary Rondo would have commanded. They also save cash by shedding Grants deal, which will help them keep the players they see as key to another playoff run. The Suns have been very focused on their bankbook lately and this is another way for them to save cash without giving up too much of their future.
