SUNS TRADE FIRST-ROUNDER

The Portland Trail Blazers acquired forward James Jones and guard Rudy Fernandez from the Phoenix Suns for cash considerations.

What does it give the Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers capitalize on Phoenix's fiscal restraint and add a guy who may be the next Manu Ginobili. It's incredible how many solid players Portland has added lately, and Fernandez has the goods to be a star in the NBA. He will likely be a backup for Brandon Roy early on, but should be a key player for the Blazers going forward and is a nice fit alongside fellow countryman Sergio Rodriguez. Meanwhile Jones is a solid veteran addition who can hit the three and play some defense, but it remains to be seen whether he will stick with the now over-stocked Blazers.

What does it give the Phoenix Suns
This is yet another financially-motivated move by the Suns, who turned their right to pick (and their good scouting) into cash. Fernandez becomes the latest great selection by the Suns to be cashed in, joining Sergio Rodriguez, Rajon Rondo, Nate Robinson, and Luol Deng from recent years. Moving Jones as well likely helps free up cash for newcomer Grant Hill.
